Neumann, physiotherapist, author, scholar, and teacher will present an on-line, live (Zoom) course on the foundations of muscle-and-joint kinesiology of the shoulder. He is the author of the international bestselling Kinesiology textbook: Neumann DA: Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System: Foundations for Physical Rehabilitation, 3rd edition (Elsevier 2017; translated in 10 languages). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The course will explore the important structural and functional relationships that relate to movement and stability of the shoulder region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The course consists of 3 main topics: <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">I: Essential Arthrology of the Shoulder <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">II: Seven Kinematic Principles of Shoulder Abduction <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">III: Muscle and Joint Interaction of the Shoulder<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This in-depth presentation will provide an excellent foundation for clinical evaluation and treatment of the shoulder region. The concepts discussed in this course will provide a foundation for a wide range of interests, from healthy athletes to persons with neurological or musculoskeletal pathology or disorders. Clinical implications range from pediatrics to geriatrics, involving neurologic and orthopaedic perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This course is presented through lecture and demonstration, enhanced by videos or images of persons with specific or global muscle weakness or poor neuromuscular control of the shoulder. In addition, the presentation will show cadaver images, unique teaching models, EMG demonstrations, and many illustrations taken from his textbook. These illustrations clearly describe the anatomic and mechanical basis for ideal and abnormal shoulder movement and posturing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Course Objectives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After this course, participants shall be able to:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1) <\/strong>Describe the detailed structural and functional relationships of the joints of theshoulder complex.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2)<\/strong>\u00a0Cite the muscular drive and normal synergies that operate in the healthy shoulder.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>3)<\/strong>\u00a0Describe how the shoulder operates to achieve maximal reach of the upper limb as well as a source of power for weight bearing throughout the upper limb. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>4)<\/strong>\u00a0Explain the pathokinesiologic mechanics behind several orthopedic and neurologic conditions of proximal upper extremity.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>5) <\/strong>Incorporate kinesiological principles to guide evaluation and treatment for rehabilitation of neuro-musculoskeletal pathologies of the shoulder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>TUTOR: <\/strong><strong>Donald A. Neumann, PhD, PT, FAPTA.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Neumann received a B.S. in physical therapy from the University of Florida. After several <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years of practice and teaching in rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury, he received a Ph.D. in Exercise Science from the University of Iowa. In 1986, he joined Marquette University where he is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physical Therapy. His areas of teaching at the university include kinesiology and anatomy. Donald has received several of the highest awards offered by the American Physical Therapy Association for his teaching, writing, research, and international service. Dr. Neumann received a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teacher of the Year Award<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Marquette University and was named <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wisconsin&#8217;s College Professor of the Year<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Carnegie Foundation. Dr. Neumann has received <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fulbright Scholarships<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to teach kinesiology in Lithuania, Hungary, Japan, and Ireland. In 2007, he received an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honorary Doctorate Degree<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (formally Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education) for his impact on the growth of physiotherapy education across Lithuania.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Neumann is the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Kinesiology: Foundations for Rehabilitation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published by Elsevier, 3rd ed, 2017 (4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> edition expected in 2024). He has also authored chapters on HIP in the 41st and 42nd editions of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Gray\u2019s Anatomy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
