Course Description:
Dr. Donald A. Neumann, physiotherapist, author, scholar, and teacher will present an on-line, live (Zoom) course on the foundations of muscle-and-joint kinesiology of the shoulder. He is the author of the international bestselling Kinesiology textbook: Neumann DA: Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System: Foundations for Physical Rehabilitation, 3rd edition (Elsevier 2017; translated in 10 languages).
The course will explore the important structural and functional relationships that relate to movement and stability of the shoulder region.
The course consists of 3 main topics:
I: Essential Arthrology of the Shoulder
II: Seven Kinematic Principles of Shoulder Abduction
III: Muscle and Joint Interaction of the Shoulder
This in-depth presentation will provide an excellent foundation for clinical evaluation and treatment of the shoulder region. The concepts discussed in this course will provide a foundation for a wide range of interests, from healthy athletes to persons with neurological or musculoskeletal pathology or disorders. Clinical implications range from pediatrics to geriatrics, involving neurologic and orthopaedic perspectives.
This course is presented through lecture and demonstration, enhanced by videos or images of persons with specific or global muscle weakness or poor neuromuscular control of the shoulder. In addition, the presentation will show cadaver images, unique teaching models, EMG demonstrations, and many illustrations taken from his textbook. These illustrations clearly describe the anatomic and mechanical basis for ideal and abnormal shoulder movement and posturing.
Course Objectives:
After this course, participants shall be able to:
1) Describe the detailed structural and functional relationships of the joints of theshoulder complex.
2) Cite the muscular drive and normal synergies that operate in the healthy shoulder.
3) Describe how the shoulder operates to achieve maximal reach of the upper limb as well as a source of power for weight bearing throughout the upper limb.
4) Explain the pathokinesiologic mechanics behind several orthopedic and neurologic conditions of proximal upper extremity.
5) Incorporate kinesiological principles to guide evaluation and treatment for rehabilitation of neuro-musculoskeletal pathologies of the shoulder.
TUTOR: Donald A. Neumann, PhD, PT, FAPTA.
Dr. Neumann received a B.S. in physical therapy from the University of Florida. After several years of practice and teaching in rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury, he received a Ph.D. in Exercise Science from the University of Iowa. In 1986, he joined Marquette University where he is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physical Therapy. His areas of teaching at the university include kinesiology and anatomy. Donald has received several of the highest awards offered by the American Physical Therapy Association for his teaching, writing, research, and international service. Dr. Neumann received a Teacher of the Year Award at Marquette University and was named Wisconsin’s College Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. Dr. Neumann has received Fulbright Scholarships to teach kinesiology in Lithuania, Hungary, Japan, and Ireland. In 2007, he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (formally Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education) for his impact on the growth of physiotherapy education across Lithuania.
Dr. Neumann is the author of Human Kinesiology: Foundations for Rehabilitation, published by Elsevier, 3rd ed, 2017 (4th edition expected in 2024). He has also authored chapters on HIP in the 41st and 42nd editions of British Gray’s Anatomy. Donald was an Associate Editor of JOSPT from 2002-2015.
